My Entry Essay
College is a place where potential leaders and motivators go to learn how to express themselves. So why wouldn't I go. I see myself as a person that takes control of my environment and influence those around me. A lot of issues in this world don't make sense to me and in-turn forces me to have a completely different outlook. People tell me all the time that my lifestyle is one of a rebel and that I tend to "go against the grain." It isn't that I don't cooperate with society and obey the law, I do. It's just that I believe that society could be a better place and college will teach me how to spread my belief.
Besides bettering myself, my motivation for going to college is that it is a place to acquire a variety of knowledge and expose myself to a different lifestyle. Also, my brother is a motivating factor. He is scheduled to graduate from Howard University next May and I can only see him moving closer to his dream. There are other options out there that I can chose from but only one will do me justice, college.
I want to study History in an undergraduate program. History and Social Studies has always been my love. Throughout my years, my family and friends have told me that I know and pay attention to historical facts and figures and I've always done well in that area of school. And other than grades, I just love History. Reading, writing, teaching, whatever is involved with expanding my mind in current events and the past, I am immersed in it. My future goal is to one day become a professor at a university to teach young minds. My whole life I have wondered about this world and its history, or "his-story", and why has it been taught to us in school. I want to do my research in school and be able to reveal the truth, or the parts that our schoolbooks have overlooked.
I will be the first to admit that I am not the perfect person. Trials and tribulations have been the downfall to my existence, but I can't let that stop me. Many times I have walked into debacles and didn't know where to turn, but now I do. Like the old saying, "it is never too late, to get up and start again," and that's the mentality that I have. The Alvin Cox Scholarship was an opportunity window that I have to open. I believe that I deserve this scholarship because my intentions are good and I want to be able to help the children because they are our future. With this award I will be able to fund part of my financial obligations to the school of my choosing, and be one step closer to success. I would like to thank you for considering me for the award and I hope to hear from you all soon.
